Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1) What is a chiropractor?
A chiropractor is a healthcare professional qualified to assess, diagnose, treat, and prevent neuromusculoskeletal conditions.
Chiropractors focus particularly on the spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system, using a variety of therapeutic approaches tailored to each patient’s condition and individual needs.
3) What is the education and training required to become a chiropractor in Quebec?
In Quebec, the title of Doctor of Chiropractic is obtained through a five-year undergraduate doctoral program at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR). The program includes 245 credits and nearly 5,000 hours of training, including more than 1,500 hours of clinical internships and training. The curriculum covers anatomy, physiology, neurology, pathology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, diagnostic imaging, and chiropractic techniques.
Following graduation, chiropractors must also successfully complete the professional examinations required to practice in Quebec.
2) What should I expect during my first visit?
During your first visit, your chiropractor will take the time to discuss your reason for consultation, health history, and goals. A comprehensive chiropractic assessment will then be performed to establish a chiropractic diagnosis and identify the underlying factors contributing to your symptoms.
Based on the assessment findings, your chiropractor will explain their clinical findings and recommend a personalized treatment plan tailored to your condition and individual needs.
4) Do I need a medical referral to see a chiropractor?
No. A medical referral is not required to see a chiropractor in Quebec. Chiropractors are primary healthcare professionals, which means you can consult them directly without a medical referral.
Similarly, when clinically indicated, chiropractors can prescribe certain diagnostic imaging within their scope of practice. A comprehensive assessment helps determine whether imaging or referral to another healthcare professional is necessary.
